LUXURY PARIS-DIRT CHEAP
Whether you are ready to spend one week or one month in Paris you deserve the BEST! Twice in recent years we rented apartments in Paris during the month of September. Both May and September are wonderful weather months for visiting the City of Lights.
We happily report that come May 1st we are once again heading to Paris for SIX WEEKS. Even better we shall be living in a cheapskate priced LUXURY apartment. Whether one is visiting Paris for one week or longer renting an apartment should be considered. The typical Parisian two star hotel offers little more than a small European double bed and private bath and is about the size of a small cruise ship cabin. Our two bedroom rental is an amazing $77/day or 38% less than the cost of our favorite two star Paris hotel. Consider the following luxury amenities of our $77/day apartment:1. 1,016 sq.ft. OF LIVING SPACE, THE SIZE OF A SMALL HOME!
2. Full kitchen with microwave, breakfast bar, dishwasher and all dishes &utensils
3. Two bedrooms, TWO living rooms with extra sleeper sofa, separate dining area, separate tub and shower, large balconies and upper floor views like this LR view.

4. In-apartment washer/dryer, Cable TV, stereo, DVD player
5. Fully furnished with modern and antique furniture.
Here are pictures of the TWO LIVING ROOMS, the first LR includes a 'sleeper'sofa and the second LR includes a formal dining area. This is cheapskate madness and we love it.

We realize that many readers are time limited to a one or two weeks visit. Also many prefer sticking with an easily bookable bargain hotel. During our pre-apartment visits to Paris we recommended the two star Hotel Chaplain Rive Gauche. This fine two star hotel presently charges $124/night. The hotel has a great location, friendly staff and clean basic rooms with private bath and nothing more. This is a good last minute option. http://www.hotel-chaplain-paris.federal-hotel.com/page_en_1.html
Apartment rentals ARE also available for as little as a one week stay. Our 2002 studio is currently priced at $142 per day or $996 per week including agency fees. Yet, unlike that two star hotel this studio offers a full kitchen, separate living room and sleep alcove areas, huge balcony with high floor city view and at 355 sq.ft. is about twice the size of most small hotel rooms.
http://www.nyhabitat.com/paris-apartment/vacation/465
Note: The prices quoted on the NYHabitat web site usually denote that they do NOT include the agency fee.
Want oppulent cheapskate luxury? Our upcoming May 2007 two bedroom apartment is also available for short term rental. Here is NYHabitat’s short term rental page including more great photos of 'our' apartment known as PA-77:
http://www.nyhabitat.com/paris-apartment/vacation/77
The price, including agency fees, is $181 day for this 1,016 sq. ft. apartment that can handle a family of four plus a fifth person in the LR sleeper. You should overlook the fact that this and similar apartment prices drop dramatically for longer term rentals. Simply compare the price, amenities and comfort level of such an awesome apartment to any hotel you may be considering.
The above web sites belong to NYHabitat, the agency we used in2002. Aside from their hefty commission fees they deliver good apartments and fine service. Their fees are: 35% for less than one month, and half a month's rent for rentals of 1-3 months. Note: Prices we quote include the agency fee. To be certain, the rental process may be a bit tedious including emails, contract/lease and deposits but NYHabitat is there to help when needed. Execution of a rental contract and a substantial (at least 25%) deposit payment usually required.
To get started go to: http://www.nyhabitat.com/ Click on the Paris box and follow the LINK for vacation rentals. Then click on either Vacation (3 days to 1 month) or Furnished Rentals (1 month or longer) for lists and many photos of their properties. Our prior studio rental was PA-465 and upcoming 2 bedroom apartment, still available for most of the Spring thru Fall is PA-77.
STEVE & PAT’S $$$$ SPECIAL TIP:
Our prior studio rental (PA-464 on NYHabitat), on rue Raymond Losserand should be available for rent directly from the owners, the Nouris. This could save you 15-20% off the NYHabitat cost by cutting out the middleman. We have lost contact with the Nouris BUT the Paris yellow pages show they still live in the very same building where the rental apartment is located. You may drop them a letter of inquiry by sending the letter to: Walli Nouri, 141 rue Raymond Losserand, Paris 75014 OR you may call the Nouris at: 33-1-45450903 Fax: 33-1-40444496. Following are a composite wide angle view of the studio and our upper floor city view.

NOTE: We never used this French agency but you may find it helpful. You will need to cut and paste this address: www.paristay.com

DINERS CLUB - FREE BRITISH AIRWAYS MILES
We made our phone call, as scheduled, the last week of August. One simple call to Diners Club and our modest 16,000 Diners Club miles were transferred to British Airways, where they 'magically' became 24,000 British Airways miles. This and similar Diners/British Airways transfer deals have been ongoing for many years resulting in our accruing over 300,000 unused BA miles. This deal is discussed in detail in Steve's ALLEXPERTS.COM article found at: www.cheapskatetravel.blogspot.com
GLOBAL TRAVEL & FAM TRIPSFirst, a brief recap. In our Spring 2000
issue we informed readers of Steve’s ‘experiment’ becoming a home based Global Travel International travel agent complete with his free travel agent web site and ARC/IATA Travel Agent credentials/card. Over the years we received money saving benefits that always exceeded the yearly renewal fees. Ex. We booked an upscale Montreal all suite hotel. Steve's IATA Travel Agent status gave us their $130/night studio suite discounted to $82. The one weeks savings was a whopping $336. They also gave us deluxe daily breakfasts for another $200 of savings. Overall, we saved over $500 thanks to Steve’s Global Travel Agent status. In Toronto, the manager of another all suite apartment complex upgraded us from their basic one bedroom apartment to their DELUXE unit with all new carpets, furniture etc. Now, in 2006 there are two items to report. One relates to Global’s recent ‘changes’ in fees and their Risk Free membership and the other an upcoming travel ‘report' on agent only FAM Trips.Global Travel in 2006: The original membership fee price of $495 has been
substantially reduced to either a single payment of $295 + activation fee of $19.95 or you may choose Global’s new Risk Free Offer based on a monthly membership fee of $29.95. While the offer states that applicants are making a one year commitment the Risk Free Trial appears to assure that one can cancel at any time. Feel free to contact us for further information about our Global experience. Should any readers apply to become Global Agents please include Steve’s PIN # 59120-001 where requested on the application.FAM TRIPS: DISCOUNT HEAVEN?
Simply defined FAM TRIPS, also known as Familiarization Trips, are discounted vacations offered to Travel Agents. Why have we not we used FAM TRIPS over the years? Mostly because our well planned three month trips already included super savings. There was almost one exception. We spotted Sunnyland Tours whirlwind 8-days Egypt tour, including Nile Cruise, plane flight to Abu Simbel and Cairo. Their price was about $1,600 BUT they offered the same tour FAM PRICED at $1,100, a huge savings of $550 for Steve (the Agent) and $450 for Patty (Agent’s companion). This would have been $900 in very real savings. We say “would have” because, in the end, we bartered a video filming assignment for the 8-days tour. Contacts: Check out Global’s Risk Free offer at: http://www.globaltravel.com/There are subscriber online newsletters that offer FAM TRIP listings. We do NOT vouch for these online publications but have noted our positive experience with Sunnyland Tours and Value World Tours both of whom offered us legitimate money saving FAM TRIP DEALS. We plan to report further, in our next issue, on the above FAM TRIP publications. Meanwhile here are several FAM TRIP web sites you may wish to explore:

HAWAII INTER-ISLAND FLIGHTS $25 EACH WAY
Hawaiian Airlines offers ‘almost’ FREE round trip Inter-Island tickets. You may use your ‘almost’ FREE miles for ANY inter-island flight. We used one such award to enjoy an awesome one day outing from Maui to the Big Island of Hawaii where we marveled at Volcano National Park's cauldrons of steaming, orange flowing molten lava spilling into the sea.
Once in Hawaii you may fly to any nearby island of your choice almost free. When we say almost FREE we mean just that. Your inter island flight tickets are cheapskate priced at just $25 EACH WAY or $50 round trip. Regular high season ticket prices currently range from $146 to a whopping $246 round trip. First apply for the Hawaiian Bank of America Platinum Visa card, pay the reasonable $50 fee and instantly receive your 10,000 BONUS miles good for one round trip inter-island flight to between any two Hawaiian islands. It is that simple. Need more than one flight? Have another family member participate in the very same promotion by applying for their own Platinum Visa card. Hawaiian Airlines offers several additional ‘perks’ such as a 50% off companion ticket that likely applies to their lowest economy fares from the U.S. mainland to Hawaii. You will find all the details of this offer at: http://www.bankofamerica.com/hawaiian_airlines_site/index.cfm?template=cc_hawaiian_plat We love options and Hawaiian airlines offers an interesting one. First, Hawaiian permits family pooling of miles. Their second offer is a Bank of America Classic Visa card priced at only $25 and providing 5,000 BONUS miles. Assuming spouses, significant others etc. each apply for a set of one Classic and one Platinum card each couple will receive 15,000 miles which, when pooled, adds up to 30,000 miles. Use any of the cards until you reach the magic number, 35,000, and in no time you will have ONE Round Trip ticket from any U.S. major city to any Hawaiian island, good anytime including high season, for the total cost of $150. Here are the details for the Classic Visa Card. http://www.bankofamerica.com/hawaiian_airlines_site/index.

TRAVEL INSURANCE: DON’T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT

Over the years much in the world in general and the world of travel has changed. We wish we could say all for the better but daily headlines say otherwise. On the plus side, Americans continue to travel throughout our great country and the ‘safest’ areas in the world. One of our travel mantras has been ‘buy good travel insurance before you head out the door.’ Our old favorite, Travelers Insurance’s Travel Pak has been replaced by a new web site, new product and new carrier. On the plus side, we used the new version of Travel Pak and recommend it. Enter Travel Insured International, underwritten by a AAA rated company. Their two major travel policies are: Worldwide Trip Protector Comprehensive (T3000) and Worldwide Trip Protector Gold Comprehensive (3020). Go to this web page, click on the appropriate boxes and you may COMPARE their two policies conveniently shown side by side. The page also permits a PDF download of policy details. Many major benefits of the two are identical. These include Trip Cancellation/Interruption, Missed Connection, Trip Delay and Baggage/Personal Belongings. Other coverages differ. Ex. I can live with $500,000 Medical Evacuation versus the Gold plan’s higher $1,000,000 limit. Overall we recommend the lower priced Worldwide Trip Protector Comprehensive (T3000) policy. What about cost? Ex. A one week Caribbean Princess cruise, priced at $1,500 including air fare for a 50 year old traveler would cost $69.
http://travelinsured.com/Travel-Insurance/Travel-Insurance-Plans.aspx?family=1
Plans.aspx?family=1

We often find some or most of our premium is recouped by our valid claims for damage/loss of personal property. Filing appropriate claims, even small dollar claims, can add up. On our last trip we received a whopping $177 refund claim check for: a perfume bottle stolen from our hotel room, $20 for Nike jacket Steve left on a tour bus, $35 for good hair cutting scissor confiscated when Patty forgot to remove it from her carry-on and $75 for Steve’s Flatfoto mini digital camera/memory card left in the security basket at Heathrow. What if you do not have all your receipts? We lacked receipts for the perfume, scissors and Steve’s jacket. We made certain to file a comprehensive claim form, with documents describing the lost items and demonstrating their value resulting in our 100% reimbursement check for $177. Note: A family friend traveled to Scotland. Her luggage was lost in transit. Not only does she have $1,000 coverage for the lost luggage and contents BUT once the luggage was delayed 24 hours (whether or not it later caught up with her) she was covered up to $200 for the immediate purchase of any and all necessaries. We always remind people that regardless of claims this coverage offers blissful peace of mind, something money (for this policy) can buy.
$45 TO PARIS: WE DID IT AND SO SHOULD YOU

Since our last CTN issue we DID IT. We paid $90 and received 50,000 US Airway miles EACH good for TWO almost free ROUND TRIP TICKETS TO EUROPE even in high season. One serious question remains.....did you get your $45 (Each way) tickets to Europe as well? Once again we are talking about an INSTANT almost free PLANE TICKET. No waiting to accrue miles. Once you qualify the ticket is yours for the asking. We applied for and easily obtained our FREE Juniper Bank Visa US Airways card by applying using the below LINK. We each next paid $90 for the Bank of America US Airways Visa card, which LINK is also shown below. In short order we received the cards and even better the promised 40,000 US Airway miles. If we stopped then and there we had in hand more than enough miles for each of us to receive a ROUND TRIP ticket to Maui, any other Hawaiian island, Mexico or Central America. However we wanted MORE. Our goal was to obtain two round trip tickets to Europe without spending a nickel more than the $90 we had already paid. That would mean two sets of airline tickets to Europe, good even in high season, for $45 each way, which is as close to FREE as we can get. We went the the US Airways web site and requested online statements for another 1,000 free miles. Now with 41,000 miles each we first used Steve’s US Airways Visa card which qualifies for not one mile per dollar but 1 ½ miles per dollar. It would normally take $6,000 of credit purchases to reach the magic number of 50,000 miles needed for the round trip Europe ticket.
Enter the Dividend Miles dining program: http://usairways.com/awa/content/dividendmiles/earnmiles
/dining.aspx
Okay, we are not big on dining programs but did join this one for free. Since we had a birthday dinner coming up at Hungry Hunter Steak House, listed in the Dining program for our area, we realized there were megga miles to be had. After 12 dinners at qualifying restaurants one receives 10 MILES PER DOLLAR. The dinner was days away. How to charge 12 dinners quickly AND VERY CHEAPLY? We hustled over to one of the cheapest member restaurants , Fudruckers Hamburgers, off hours so the restaurant was empty. The restaurant totally cooperated as we ordered 12 sodas and/or cheap side dishes each on its own check. That did it. We instantly qualified for the 10 miles per dollar bonus. Our Hungry Hunter Dinner bill of $230 for about 8 family members saw us receiving 2,300 US Airway miles. After Steve’s Visa card reached 50,000 miles we switched cards and both used Patty’s card until she reached 50,000 miles. Without spending another cent we each parleyed our 41,000 miles into 50,000 miles good for a round trip ticket to Europe. Check out the LINKS below and/or re-read last issue’s article found at http://ctnspring2006.blogspot.com/ and DO IT.
To recap, first apply for the Free Juniper Bank US Airways Mastercard with 15,000 free Bonus Miles. Request E-statements on the application and receive an extra 1,000 miles. This card offers a bonus of 1.5 miles for every dollar spent. Here is the LINK for the Juniper US Airways Free Mastercard: http://www.lotsmoremiles.com/ Next, apply for US Airways Bank of America Signature Visa card, pay the annual $90 fee, use the card at least ONCE and receive 25,000 instant Bonus Miles Here are the LINKS:

STEVE’S GIZMO CORNER
Last CTN issue I announced my intent to check out Ediscountgascards.com. This company was selling prepaid gas cards at a whopping 15% discount. After several false starts it became obvious this outfit was either a scam OR found themselves unable to deliver as promised for any number of reasons. In the end, the latter seems to have been the case. On the plus side, the company cancelled all purchases and refunded all customers.
NOW, A GIZMO THAT ROCKS!

The Archos 500 truly rocks which brings me to another question you may be asking.....WHAT IS AN ARCHOS 500? Think of a Tivo that can record up to 130 hours of video, about 85 full length movies, and this Tivo also has a built-in very large 4" crystal clear LCD screen. Then, by a feat of magic it has been miniaturized down to a hand held 3" x 4.9" x .07" and you have the Archos 500, a teenie portable video player/recorder. Want to mix and max, the Archos can handle 85 movies OR 15,000 songs or 300,000 favorite photos (OK no one has 300,000 photos) or you can mix and match. Run a cord from the Archos to any TV set, whether North American NTSC or overseas PAL sets and watch movies full screen at nearly DVD quality. Let us say you commute for hours a day and need your 'fix' of soap opera, CNN or sports. You can use the Archos just like a VCR, to record TV shows for playback during your commute. You may use headphones & it's own speaker.
PC Magazine reviewed the Archos 500 and said: As a portable DVR (digital video recorder) it’s second to none in its class. They tout its “..impressive audio recording...” and it’s “....smooth clear video...” and “....we really like the Archos 500...” See: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1896902,00.asp The Archos is great for travel. It’s battery will plays for 4.5 hours of video and is removable so that a spare battery will double the play time. It's lithium-ion battery charger is universal 110-240.
You can ‘feed’ the Archos any audio or video source that outputs using RCA audio/video cables or super VHS cables. Those who are computer savvy can use the USB connection to download music from their PCs. It will download video from DVD players, camcorders, video recorders and even vinyl records so long as the record player has RCA audio outputs. The Archos will even record copy proteced DVDs but you can not view them on a T.V. All in all , the amazing Archos 500 is one of the most fun small sized gizmos I have ever owned. Archos is not cheap. I paid $400 BUT prices have been dropping so figure $295- $400 depending on how good a shopper you are. Visit the Archos web site to learn more about this amazing product : http://www.archos.com/products/video/av_500/tech_specs.html?country=global〈=en
LAS VEGAS GIVE-A-WAY A STUDIO SUITE,
FREE SHOWS, DINNERS & MORE JUST $99

During our travels we are always amenity and comfort driven. Last January, we were preparing for a mini Las Vegas Get-a-way set for mid May. Just then we received a phone solicitation to attend a 90 minutes Time Share presentation at the Cancun Resort in Las Vegas. Our reward would be a package that included lodging at the Cancun or other properties. The new, upscale Cancun Resort is located about 7 miles south of the strip.
The hotel with a pyramid sitting between two swimming pools is splendid. In short order we
checked their credentials and then paid them $99. This deal is ONGOING, extended from its May 2006 expiration date and is posted on a Monarch web site at:http://golasvegasnow.com/index.html
The $99 Four day Three Night Deal includes:
- 4 days & 3 nights suite lodging at their Cancun Resort* - $100 Casino Slot Play - 2 Dinner Certificates - 4 Complimentary Show Tickets - 50% Off Golf - Free VIP Tour of Cancun ResoCancun Resort (Required as part of the Time Share presentation)
* Since we werer not driving we preferred a hotel on or very near the strip. Monarch is able to accomodate such requests and set us up in a lovely studio suite at the Tuscany Suites Resort located one long city block behind Baleys.
First, check out Monarch’s Cancun Resort Hotel:
http://www.monarchgrandvacations.com/resort.aspx?r=1
We toured the hotel and can assure you it offers super spanking new hotel/suite luxury. On the down side there is no neighborhood to speak of and no reliable shuttle bus service to the strip. So, Cancun is best suited for those driving given the $15 fare each way to the strip.
Our choice, Tuscany Suites & Casino was awesome. Just check out the virtual tour of Tuscany Suites and see for yourself. http://www.tuscanylasvegas.com/index.php?pid=VIRTUALTOURS
Back to our favorite topic, amenities. All suites include:
* Beautifully-appointed suites all of which are over 600 square ft in size! * 25" remote-controlled cable television, pay-per-view movie access, music access, and Nintendo for the kids * One king-size or two double beds * Refrigerator (large) & Coffee Maker with complimentary coffee * Hairdryer - Iron/board - in-room electronic safe * Deluxe over-sized bathrooms featuring separate soaking tub and shower * Wireless High-Speed Internet Access available through SBC * Writing desk and telephone equipped with modem port * Palm tree laden European motif swimming pools (2), heated for year-round use plus, Jacuzzi Spas, Poolside Bar and fitness center.
Steve & Pat’s Post Trip Review: Its location, one block from the strip was great. The hotel has several low profile buildings that surround the landscaped mediterranean style pool. Our suite was huge and super comfortable with King size bed, full living room with club chairs, sofa and T.V.
Other Perks: $100 Casino play is useless and only good on one huge machine at one casino. Sahara dinner buffet coupons were welcome. Show tickets were for good B level afternoon and evening shows.
Time Share Presentation: We scheduled this for the morning of our choice. Monarch, at our request, reimbursed taxi fare. The Cancun Resort Tour was fun and the entire tour/presentation stretched to two hours. We declined to purchase and happily report there was no hard sell.
